OIl City Dry Goods Business

Nov. 1886: G. A. Welker and S. L. Maxwell went into the dry goods business on Oil City's South Side. Welker and Maxwell store was located in a brick building at the corner of First Street and Central Avenue. Mr. Welker had been ably involved in a variety of businesses in Clarion County, in Pittsburgh and in parts of the oil fields before coming to Oil City in 1886. Mr. Maxwell was born at Tippecanoe Furnace in Clarion County, working in that county and in Pittsburgh before moving to Oil City in 1877. He was an oil producer, on the Oil Exchange and a leader in the development of the community, having served two terms on the common council.. [Oil City newspaper?]
