Unique Family Tree`

In 1935, a Johnstown, Pennsylvania, woman fell down the cellar stairs and broke her arm. One result of that mishap is the unique record of one branch of the Joseph Johns family [Johns was the founder of Johnstown, Cambria Co., Pa.]

The records, in the form of a family tree design on a bed shett, is being maintained by mrs. Elias Wingard, 72, of 112 Hostetler Road, Johnstown. Some 440 descendants of Moses K. Johns, a great grandson of Joseph Johns, can see his or her name hand-embroidered on separate twigs or branches of the tree. Each family offshoot is recorded in a different color of thread.

Mrs. Wingard found the splint on her broken arm limited her activities, but she still could sew. The bed sheet record was started, and she kept it up through the years. All births are reported promptly so that they can be embroidered on the sheet.
